Elvis at the O2: it sure ain’t Memphis, but the King lives on
Hundreds of personal possessions of Elvis Presley are on show in London – at a new exhibition at the O2 – including gold lame suits, gold discs, and even his gold telephone – though this is a mere taster of the tens of thousands of artefacts on display in Graceland, his Memphis home
Elvis Aaron Presley, the King of rock’n’roll, never performed in the UK. Instead, Elvis at the O2 is TCB – that’s Taking Care of Business, the Presley motto.
It’s the closest most British fans will ever get to Memphis, Tennessee, where he lived until his death in 1977. At his home in Graceland, there are tens of thousands of artefacts – from which a small selection has been shipped over to the UK. A 1957 gold lame suit is just one piece from the extended showbiz wardrobe of jumpsuits, leather outfits and increasingly bizarre costumes worn by Elvis in later years in Las Vegas; his mother’s pink Cadillac Fleetwood is a retro delight from the twenty ostentatious gas guzzlers on show in the Elvis Presley Automobile Museum – one of several buildings on the Graceland compound.

Hidden City writer Karl Whitney on Dublin
Dublin is a city of stories and secrets but for the author and historian exploring outside of its centre is the best way to discover the essence of the Irish capital
When I think of Dublin my focus is on its suburbs and its edges, because that’s where I come from. I grew up in the south-west of the city in a suburb called Tallaght, which was built in the 1970s. But when I consider the city of Dublin, I see the compact, Georgian centre with its monumental buildings such as the old Irish parliament on College Green, opposite Trinity College.
You get to know what’s real about a city when you leave the centre of it. Dublin is keen on portraying itself in a certain way, as a tourist-friendly city, and part of that means putting across ideas of places you must visit, like the Guinness factory and Trinity College – to see the Book of Kells. These places are always busy and because of the time people spend going to them they don’t really get to see anywhere else.

Cedar Lewisohn on the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, the Netherlands
The artist feels right at home at this utopian art and design institute, which also welcomes visitors for events and the best coffee in town
I first discovered the Jan Van Eyck when I was visiting Maastricht to do an exhibition. I just walked past this slightly mysterious looking building and wondered what was going on inside. It’s quite subtle, but beautiful: a modernist building designed by Fritz Putz – a cool, glass and concrete structure, very minimal. Once you’re inside it’s like a temple of light. Inside art production goes on; people make art and people think about making art. And they also think about design, which is taken very seriously in the Netherlands.
I’m eight months into a one year residency there. There are very few places like this in Europe – a post-academic place where you can just come and stay. There are no restrictions put on you. It’s quite utopian in a way, without wanting to be too overenthusiastic. But there’s a lot for day-to-day visitors too. It’s open to the public and if you feel like a bit of art theory then Thursday evening is a great time to pop by. Most weeks there’s a presentation where either the resident artists present their work or guest visitors (often theorists or thinkers) present their work or films and then hold discussions or debates.

John Waters on Baltimore
The Hairspray and Pink Flamingos director cruises his hometown’s diners and bars, and reveals the location of Divine’s ‘poop scoop’
As a kid I explored the sewers of Baltimore. They were building the beltway (ring road) near my parents’ house and we used to crawl down in the drain pipes really deep. So dangerous now I think about it, but that was my first journey. Like C.H.U.D – that movie about cannibalistic human underground dwellers.
I used to hitchhike a lot. I’d come home on the train from New York and there’d be no cabs, but people would pick me right up and take me to my door because they recognised me. It was like a car service. I never really had a bad experience hitchhiking. Well, once somebody pulled a gun, but they fired it out of the window.

is there anything better than...
eating a burrito for breakfast.
not being hungover when you should be.
dogs in christmas sweaters.
the smell of something cooking in the kitchen when you get home.
buying a size smaller than you thought you could.
licking batter of a spoon.
a shelf full of books.
realizing you can make it.
freshly painted baseboards.
apple cider and bourbon.
seat heaters in a car.
freshly dry-cleaned clothes.
a sunday new york times.
scoring an old pretty rug with pink in it for cheap.
realizing you're wearing something for the third season.
a really great view.
let's get there today.
